Crow and the Waterhole - cover The Two Hearted Numbat - cover

Congratulations to Ambelin Kwaymullina on being short listed for Crow and the Waterhole for both the Children's Book Mary Ryan's Award in the Queensland Premier's Literary Awards and the Children's Books category in the Western Australian Premier's Book Awards. Crow lives in a tree by a waterhole. Each morning, she stares into the water, and at another, more beautiful and impressive crow than her. Crow thought Crow-in-the-waterhole was the most wonderful bird she had ever seen. 'She looks like a crow who could change the world. I wish I could be like her.' Crow flies to seek her destiny, as she thinks she cannot be as wonderful as the crow in the waterhole and she wants to find what she can be good at. After traveling far and wide, helping others along the way, she finds that her true destiny lies within. See the Fremantle Press web site for teacher's notes. Also, look out for Ambelin's latest book the she illustrated and co-wrote with Ezekeiel Kwaymullina. The Two Hearted Numbat was published in September 2008 by Fremantle Press. Crossing the Line - coverSee Danne Bates' latest book, Crossing the Line, published in August 2008 by Ford St. Dianne has authored over 90 books for young readers including the prize-winning The Last Refuge which sold into Europe. This is a moving and sensitive story dealing with the topic of self-harm, obsession and stalking. 'Drama, pathos, nail-biting stuff – this is Dianne Bates at her best,' Margaret Clark.

‘Bates, an experienced and gifted storyteller....has handled the difficult and confronting themes of self-harm and stalking with great insight told in a strong narrative voice.’
~ Good Reading, September 2008
‘Bates understands well the key to keeping readers turining pages is creating characters the world cares about. Sophie's story, delivered in first person present tense, is potent and immediate....Bates shows readers how it feels to live with mental illness - how utterly soul destroying it is. But more importantly, she shows us how it is possible to work through such seemingly insurmountable problems and find a semblance of peace....This is a story that stays with the reader long after the last line is read. Highly recommended.’
~ The Reading Stack, August 2008, Jenny Meurfield
