Wendy Orr has had a busy year, with the release of Across the Dark Sea, in May; Too Much Stuff, a Penguin Nibble, in July and Mokie and Bik by Allen & Unwin in September. The West Australian launch of Mokie and Bik, held during the Sprung Literary Festival in Albany, was filmed for ABC TV's "Can We Help?" and should be screened on Dec 8 at 6:30pm. See your program guides for details. Mokie and Bik are delightful twins who live on a boat with Laddie the dog, Slow the sleepy tortle, and Ruby who sings all day. Dad is on his ship-at-sea, Mum is busy arting, so, underfoot or overbaord, the twins have twice as much fun as anyone else. Mokie and Bik will be published in the USA by Henry Holt in the northern Spring of 2007.
Jack Brown and the Trail of the Pythons, the second novel in the Jack Brown Series by Greg Pyers’, is now available in all good book stores. The first in the series, Jack Brown and the Labyrinth of the Bats, was published by ABC Books in April 2006 and is also available in a 3 CD set narrated by Brendan Higgins who brilliantly captures the mood of intrigue and suspense. See the great reviews of both books in the November edition of Magpies and the December edition of the Friends of the Melbourne Zoos (FOTZ) News. Also good reviews for Jack Brown and the Trail of the Pythons appeared recently in the Ballarat Courier and the Aussiereviews web site. Greg was short listed in the 2005 Australian Children’s Book Council Awards non fiction category and his first novel, Doublecross, was published by ABC books in August 2005.
Bronwyn Bancroft’s art along with that by Sally Morgan and other Australian Aboriginal Women artists is being exhibited from 6 November to 26 November in a show titled, My Land My Country at the Chrissie Cotter Gallery, 43 Pidcock St, Camperdown, NSW. This exhibition was opened by Caroline Glass Patterson (Wiradjurl/Dhunguttl) with an Acknowledgement to Country by Euphemia Bostock (Bundjalung) and speaker Mayor Morris Hanna on 10 November. Bronwyn is also having a solo exhibition, Linear Linkages at Vivien Anderson Gallery, 470 Dandenong Rd Caulfield North, Victoria, from 8 November to 2 December 2006.
Alan Hopgood is presenting two new short plays, Widows, or More Than a Dead Man's Wife and Never Too Old, at Chapel Off Chapel on the 10th of October at 7.30pm. All tickets $20.00. After 260 performances of The Carer by acclaimed Australian icon Chrles "Bud" Tingwell since 2000, Alan has taken on the role in this hit play which is full of warmth and humour. There will be five perforamces at Bakery at 1812 Theatre, Rose Street, Upper Ferntree Gully from Thursday 12 October through Sunday 15 October. Bookings 97292148. See Mark Svendsen’s latest book Circus Carnivore, illustrated by Ben Redlich, which has recently been be published in the USA by Houghton Mifflin. It was published by Lothian Books in Australia in 2005.
