November 2004

Congratulations to Bronwyn Bancroft who illustrated Diane Wolkstein’s adaptation, Sun Mother Wakes the World: An Australian Creation Story published by HarperCollins New York in April 2004. The book has been named in the New York Public Library’s annual list Children’s Books 2004 - 100 Titles for reading & Sharing. Marilyn Taniguchi, in School Library Journal April 2004, noted that “Bold colors and patterns draw the eye along each page and bring the story to life. Wolkstein’s authoritative notes carefully document her sources, and add insights into the origins of the story.” See Bronwyn’s web site at www.bronwynbancroft.com. The book will be available through HarperCollins in Australia in 2005.

Reading The River - cover Inside Out - cover

Congratulations to Robert Adamson on receiving an Australia Council Fellowship. See the Sydney Morning Herald article for details. Robert was in the UK to launch and promote the book and read with Lee Harwood at Festival Hall in London. He also appeared at the Ledbury Poetry Festival. See his autobiography, Inside Out, published by Text Publishing in March 2004. It is much more than a memoir. It brims with life as he unsentimentally re-creates his past experiences, no matter how dark or painful, with astonishing generosity and sympathy.

The Encyclopaedia of Exercise and Sport Health by Dr Peter Brukner, Dr Karim Khan and John Kron was published in Australia in early 2004 by Allen & Unwin. Whether you want to get the most out of training, your child has been injured playing sport, you are studying physical education at high school or tertiary level or want to know which exercise can improve your health, this book has the answers. It is clearly illustrated and has non-jargon explanations for thousands of questions about the health and fitness related aspects of exercise and sport.

Gilly McInnes’s theatrical adaptation of “The Hobbit” by JRR Tolkien will be produced in Minneapolis, USA by The Children’s Theatre Company in their 2004-2005 season.

A new edition of Kevin Walsh’s Water-saving Gardening, titled Water-Wise Gardening was published in early 2004 by New Holland Publishers. Demand was so high that stocks were low for a time but now that there has been another print run, you should be able to get this book at any good book store. Years of drought and low water catchment levels in many centres mean this user friendly book is a must for gardeners all around our dry country.
