About writing in Australia: Book Illustration

Call the following publishers of children’s books to discuss their interest in your work. You could suggest making an appointment to show them your folio, or you could send in samples of your illustration to particular texts. We suggest that you send them a style sheet or two, just one or two pages upon which you have reduced a number of images to indicate the breadth of type of illustration you do. You could also ask whether they recommend you speak to people in the design department (if there is one) or in adult publishing in their company. Please do not send them any material without speaking to them on the telephone first.

Please note that publishers are most unlikely to take on picture storybook texts and illustrations because this type of book is extremely expensive to produce. Golvan Arts Management suggests you look at Ark in the Park by Wendy Orr and published by Angus & Robertson. This book won the Children’s Book Council Award for younger readers in 1995. This sort of format, with black line drawings, is of interest to most children’s publishers.
