Jenni has opened a new gallery in Eltham, Gateway Galleries at 559 Main Rd Eltham where works by established and emerging artisits are shown.
Jenni Mitchell grew up in Eltham and has been actively involved in the region for most of her life. She was elected by the community as a councillour for the Shire of Eltham and has been an active leader in conservation issues within the region. Beginning painting at the age of ten with private painting classes at Montsalvat, she later graduated from the Phillip Institute (RMIT) majoring in painting and printmaking. Her work is predominantly oil on canvas with other areas working oil and pastel on rag paper, pastel on paper, gouache and printmaking.
Jenni is best known as a painter of the Australian landscape and a painter of Australian poets portraits. She has travelled extensively throughout the inland regions of Australia, particularly the Flinders Ranges, Lake Eyre and Tibooburra. The dry interior of Australia has been a great source of inspiration in her work. In contrast is the work she has done along the eastern and southern coasts of Australia, Port Campbell National Park in particular, with its wild coastlines and frenzied seas. Jennis vision of the horizon both with the desert and the sea have similarities.
One of Jennis most outstanding projects is her series of poets portraits which she bagan working on in 1981. To date, there are over fifty paintings in this series. Portraits include such notable poets as Professor A.D Hope, Judith Wright, Les Murray, Dorothy Porter, Chris Wallace-Crabbe, Geoffrey Dutton and many more. The portraits are to remain together as a permanent collection of contemporary Australian poets. They have been loaned for various exhibitions including a six month touring exhibition of Tasmania and will continue to be exhibited in part or in total. When the portrait series is complete a book will be published containing the portraits with a poem and biographical history of each poet.
Her work is represented in both private and public collections across Australia and overseas including Japan, UK and the USA. She has had over thirty solo exhibitions and has been involved in many group shows.
