David Miller
Childrens Author and Illustrator
David is an extremely talented artist and his paper sculpture illustrations are spectacular. These appear in Boo to a Goose by Mem Fox, published by Hodder Headline in Australia in 1996 and by Dial Books (an imprint of Penguin Putnam) in the USA in 1998. The success of Boo to a Goose was followed up with three further picture story books with Hodder Headline Australia that David wrote and illustrated: Whats for Lunch (1997); Carousel (1998) and Just Like You and Me (1999). This lovely picture book demonstrates how we are similar to animals from around the world. It was published by Dial Books in the USA in 2001. David has also illustrated books by Mark Austin (Ringle Tingle Tiger, 2002, Lothian Books) and Tania Cox (Snap Went Chester, 2003, Hodder Headline). V. Lowe in Magpies Volume 17, July 2002, wrote about Ringle Tingle Tiger: We gasp in awe at Millers prestigious brilliant paper art.
David has written and illustrated two successful activity books for Allen & Unwin: You Can Make Paper Sculptures (1995) and You Can Do Thousands of Things with String (1996). You Can Do Thousands of Things with String was published in Sweden in 1997 by Berghs Forlag as Knep Med Rep Och Snore. David has illustrated two novels for the Lothian After Dark series, Bats and The Silver Eyes, both published in 1997.
Walking Trail in Canberra: In October 1998, the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra officially opened Whats for Lunch?, an exhibition of Davids paper sculpture together with an associated walking track for young children.
David was born in Sydney in 1943 but grew up in Melbourne. He completed a Diploma of Design at Swinburne and worked for a small design studio, then in advertising agencies as art director and creative director, before establishing his own business in 1975. He is a father of three, loves the bush, oil painting, white water canoeing, sailing and being 1st Lieutenant of the Wonga Park Fire Brigade. He was taught the art of calligraphy by his father.
