Kerry Millard
Visual Artist and Book Illustrator
Kerry was born in Ottawa, Canada in the middle of winter. She grew up surrounded by pets including dogs, cats, mice, rats, turtles, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, gerbils, a dove, a horse, snakes, a bat, goldfish, two brothers and a monkey and later studied zoology at the University of Toronto where she got to feed green sea turtles. Kerry moved to Australia where she studied Veterinary Science. Over the years, she has worked as a receptionist at a radio station, a waitress, a sales assistant in a men’s clothing shop, in a butcher shop, a laboratory, has been a vet nurse, babysitter, maths tutor, dog training instructor and a veterinarian.
Kerry accidentally fell into cartooning and has been a cartoonist since 1986 drawing for numerous publications including The Sydney Morning Herald. She won Best Single Gag cartoon artist at the Australian Cartoonists’ Association awards in 1995 and again in 1999. She illustrates regularly for The NSW Department of Education and Training’s The School Magazine and has illustrated many books for children and adults.
Kerry currently lives in Sydney with whoever of her three daughters is around, a dog, one duck and two hens who wander into the kitchen to say hello. She sings and performs with two a cappella choirs and one a cappella quartet (“Dog Walking Backwards”) and does some songwriting. She is learning to juggle and works occasionally as a clown, as she explores theatre. Kerry enjoys making/inventing/fixing things; and painting and sculpture. She really enjoys dipping a toe into new ventures.
