Caged - A Story of Jewish Resistance

If you don’t believe my story I won't be offended. I can hardly believe it myself.
~ David Landau

David J. Landau was born in Warsaw in 1920 into a respected Polish-Jewish family. He worked in the family business until the outbreak of the Second World War, when he became a member of the Polish Underground and a resistance fighter. When the war ended, after staying briefly in Czechoslovakia, Germany and France, David and his wife Luba came to Australia, stateless and penniless, in 1947. Soon after their arrival, David established a clothing business and later turned to property. He died in 1996, just days after completing his work on the manuscript of Caged.

David decided to write his story encouraged by others who had also been active in the Second World War, and in the memory of his colleagues and those who died saying, ‘Whoever survives owes it to us to tell the story.’ This is the second edition of Caged. The first was a small private publication, distributed among David’s closest family and friends.

Quotes From Reviews of Caged

‘Caged is a testament to the bravery against the unimaginable evil and is one of better books I have read in a long time.’
~ Anna Punshon, Burnie Advocate
‘It is a worthy memorial to a brave man.’
~ John Vile, The Sunday Tasmanian, 28th January 2001
‘David Landau, a Polish Jew, gives us a rare story of surviving the Holocaust. He was one of the few survivors who fought back against the Nazis. It is a story of a personal tragedy, but it’s also a tale of the resistance, courage and survival, told at a relentless pace... Amidst all the destruction, slaughter and misery, he was supported by the love of his childhood sweetheart, Luba... Their story is inspiring and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.’
~ Abbey’s Bookshop
‘The story of a great hero from WWII has finally emerged from the shadows.’
~ Matt Condon, The Sunday Herald, Sydney 11th February 2001
