Madeleine Kelly
Non-Fiction Author
Madeleine Kellys first book, Life on a Roller-Coaster, published by Simon & Schuster in 2000, is an encouraging and empowering resource for anyone who lives with manic-depression whether theyre on the roller-coaster or watching from the ground. It was awarded SANE Australias inaugural Book of the Year Award.
Madeleine Kelly has suffered severe mood disturbances since the age of 16 and was diagnosed ten years later as having a form of manic depression. In the interim she studied medicine at the University of Melbourne but illness forced her withdrawal after five years effort. She has worked casually as a cleaner, medical secretary, insurance clerk, marketing officer, human resource manager, publicity officer, activist, educator and as a consumer consultant for quality improvement in Victorian public mental health services.
In 1992 Madeleine founded MoodWorks, an education group run by, and for, people with manic depression. She has served as Secretary and President of the Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council and is a member of the Australian Mental Health Consumers Network, the Disability Employment Action Centre and the Mental Health Legal Centre of Victoria.
