Shirley Hardy-Rix
Non-Fiction Writer
Shirley Hardy-Rix began work in mainstream media as soon as she left school, spending eight years reporting crime and courts on television and radio.
Shirley’s first book, Cops, Crooks and Catastrophes, was published in 1992. She then published A History - The Tin Shed and Beyond, an anecdotal history that traces the growth of the Watsonia RSL Sub-branch from its humble beginnings. She co-authored True Blue: Stories of Bravery from Victorian Police with Chief Inspector Ralph Stavely.
Her fourth book, More... Cops, Crooks and Catastrophes (Hybrid Publishers), was published in 2001. It takes the reader into the world of crooks who shouldn’t have taken up a life of crime and exposes the frailties the police would rather you didn’t see. It contains more than sixty stories which reveal those embarrassing moments from both sides of the law.
In May 2003, Shirley and her husband Brian began an 11 month motorcycle adventure across half the world. The journey commenced in the UK, from where they travelled through Europe (including Eastern Europe), along the Dalmatian coastline through the old Yugoslavia into Greece and then Turkey. It is from here the adventure truly began. They travelled from Turkey into Iran and then Pakistan and Kashmir. Some time was spent touring India before moving to Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia and then Singapore before they travelled on a cargo ship to Darwin and overland back to Melbourne.

Many listeners enjoyed Shirley’s reports on ABC Melbourne Radio 774 with Red Simon on the breakfast show and heard Shirley, Brian and Red speak at the 2004 Melbourne Writers’ Festival. Shirley and Brian have written a book about the trip, Two For The Road, to be published in Australia by Macmillan in March 2005. Books should already be in stores by 23 February. Look out for features and interviews in the travel section of The Melbourne Age on Saturday 19 February and the Melbourne Sunday Herald Sun on 20 February. Shirley and Brian will be interviewed by Jon Faine on ABC Melbourne radio on March 11.
